10 Small Changes That Would Fix Terrible Films
4. Cast Anyone Who Isn't Sofia Coppola - The Godfather Part III
The Problem: Julia Roberts was originally cast as Michael Corleone's (Al Pacino) daughter Mary, though after scheduling conflicts, Winona Ryder was hired, until a sudden bout of illness caused her to drop out at the very last minute. With little time to recast, Francis Ford Coppola hired his own daughter, Sofia, to play the part, and the results are infamous: the scene in which Mary is murdered has especially evoked unintentional laughter from audiences, as Coppola's delivery is all over the place and hammy to say the least.
Why It Would Fix The Film: Even though The Godfather Part III is a huge step down from the previous films, there's still plenty of good material here, even if it's hard to get past the fact that Coppola infects the film with her toxic performance for every second she's on screen, so much that when many talk about the film, it's pretty much the first thing that comes to mind. That's certainly true in our case, and had Winona Ryder or any decent actress who could fly to Rome in 24 hours taken the part, the final output might be very different indeed (and certainly not worse).
