10 Small Changes That Would Fix Terrible Films
5. Cut Sandman Out Completely - Spider-Man 3
The Problem: Like so many superhero movies these days, Spider-Man 3 is ambitious yet ultimately overstuffed, with the primary problem being the overabundance of villains. In addition to fan favourite Venom (Topher Grace) and the burgeoning villainy of Harry Osborn (James Franco) as Green Goblin Mk. 2, Sam Raimi also introduced Flint Marko (Thomas Hayden Church) aka Sandman, a compelling comic book character who nevertheless feels piecemeal and is ultimately superfluous to the rest of the narrative.
Why It Would Fix The Film: Cutting out Sandman would make the already meaty 140-minute run-time feel a lot less cluttered, and it would also give Raimi some breathing room to better develop his characters, namely Venom and the rather cringe-worthy love triangle between Peter (Tobey Maguire), Mary-Jane (Kirsten Dunst) and Gwen Stacy (Bryce Dallas Howard). It'd still be totally imperfect in that we'd still have to suffer through that cheesy emo Peter Parker bit and the laughable dance routines, but getting rid of Sandman avoids that awful retcon of Uncle Ben's death, and makes the whole thing feel a lot less rushed.
