10 Smart Movies With Incredibly Dumb Twists

8. Harry Faked His Own Death - Widows

The Life Of David Gale Kevin Spacey
Fox

For its first two acts, Steve McQueen's Widows is a tightly wound heist thriller about four women who attempt to steal $5 million in order to pay off a debt left behind by their criminal husbands.

It's a film which keeps you guessing about where it's going, topped by a glorious ensemble cast as it is, until arriving at a head-smackingly silly final plot twist that feels like it belongs in an entirely different movie.

It's revealed in the third reel that Veronica's (Viola Davis) husband Harry (Liam Neeson) isn't dead after all, but instead faked his own demise, killed his own crew to cover his tracks, and has started a new life with another of the widows, Amanda (Carrie Coon), whose baby he fathered. In a final confrontation, Veronica then shoots him dead.

Considering how gritty and "realistic" the first two-thirds of the movie are, this just felt a little too Lifetime for a film that was clearly gunning for Oscars - though in the end wasn't nominated for even a single one - and ensured the final act pretty much fell apart.
