The story at the core of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl sees Jack Sparrow go up against former crew mate Barbossa as the latter tries to rid himself of an Aztec curse that has rendered him immortal.

Barbossa needs the blood of the long dead Bill Turner, and it isn't long before his son William finds himself caught up in the action attempting to save the woman he loves from the clutches of the cursed pirates.

Famously based on Disney's theme park ride of the same name, Pirates of the Caribbean's story was well thought-out and was filled with plenty of twists and turns.

Towards the movie's climax, we see Jack and Barbossa show down in a gloomy cave where Barbossa has collected everything he needs to break the titular curse. All that's left is to add the final piece of gold and the blood of Will Turner, and he'll be free to live a mortal life once more.

Faced with the prospect of fighting someone who can't be killed, Jack makes the brilliant off-screen decision to steal a piece of the treasure, cursing himself alongside Barbossa. Then, when the time is right, Turner breaks the curse and allows Jack to kill his old nemesis. Brilliant.
