6. Gregory's Girl (1980)

Bill Forsyth's 1980 comedy tends to get forgotten amongst the decade's quagmire of American high school coming of age movies, most of them starring much prettier actors, and many of them written by John Hughes. However, the Scottish film stands proud as one of the finest examples of the genre, presenting a take on the awkward adolescent experiences of first crushes and tentative romances which still rings true today. That said - from the pre-credits prologue scene alone, it was clear that this film was always pushing things a bit for a PG, given we open on Gregory and his friends hiding in the trees peeping on a nurse as she gets undressed, her naked breasts shown on screen - though curiously she keeps her nurse's hat on. Quite apart from the nudity, this isn't the sort of behaviour PG movies are expected to encourage in young men these days, particularly given there are no repercussions for them (at least Back To The Future's George McFly fell out of a tree into the path of a car). On top of which, the film's abundance of sexual discussions - including some alluding to Gregory's little sister ("10 years old with the body of a woman of 13!") - most definitely go too far for a PG nowadays. Unsurprisingly, Gregory's Girl has since been pushed up to a 12 on DVD.
