10 Sneaky Movie In-Jokes You Might Have Missed

2. Inception

I

Although Christopher Nolan claims that this is purely coincidental, as the song had been chosen prior to casting, there is nevertheless a sly thrill to be found in hearing Edith Piaf's 'Non, je ne regrette rien' played throughout Inception. Although the lyrics take on a more ironic tone here, given the film's theme of altering the past in order to escaping it, the song is used as a 'kick', an auditory rope that pulls Cobb (Leonard DiCaprio) et al out of the dream world(s) and back into reality. All the while, these dream visions are being interrupted by Cobb's memories of his dead wife, Mal (played by Marion Cotillard).Things turn full circle when we remember that Cotillard came to Inception fresh from her Oscar-winning portrayal of Piaf in the biopic La Vie en Rose. On a side-note, her character in Midnight In Paris states that she has worked alongside Coco Chanel (c.f 2009's Coco Avant Chanel). By this logic, are we to expect a return of Miranda Tate/Thalia al Ghul in this year's Blood Ties? No, of course not. Don't be daft.
