10 Songs That Got More Popular Through Movies
9. Afternoon Delight - Anchorman
For as much great music was released in the '70s, it wasn't without its fair share of cheesy moments. No matter how many classic tracks bands like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath were pumping out, there was also a ton of fluff that even rose-colored glasses can't hide.
Amid the more tepid pop music, "Afternoon Delight" may be the most ear-grating song of the decade, but when it comes to San Francisco's head news reporter, it worked wonders.
Whether you are even into Will Ferrell's schtick or not, Anchorman has since become a hallmark of comedy for a generation, but the use of "Afternoon Delight" is probably one of the more enduring elements of the film. Yeah, the song is not really that good, but when you pair it with the mustachio'd Ron Burgundy, things start to make a lot more sense.
Considering Burgundy's overt machismo throughout the movie, the idea of him having one of the most tone-deaf songs about sex as his sex jam ends up being just the right amount of weird to work.
Anchorman always seemed like an homage to the '70s, so to have a song as painfully dated as this one ended up increasing its charm rather than killing it. This is certainly cheese without Anchorman, but when mixed together, it's some of the most delectable cheddar ever created.
