10 Songs That Got More Popular Through Movies
5. Hooked on a Feeling - Guardians of the Galaxy
Whoever decided to produce the soundtrack to Guardians of the Galaxy deserves some sort of award. Instead of accompanying the tale of superpowered space travelers with synthwave or epic classical music, the choice to have some of the greatest undiscovered gems of the '70s to fill out StarLord's playlist was a subtle stroke of genius. Pretty much any song from the Guardians soundtrack could qualify here, but there's something about "Hooked on a Feeling" that you just can't deny.
Part of the reason why this song works so well is that...it actually kind of doesn't. Taken on its own, this cover by Blue Swede is a prime candidate for a forgettable track, with the silly "ooga-chaka" backing vocals being a little too bizarre for most mainstream listeners to stomach. Without this movie, this song would have probably faded into the ether with all the other regrettable trends of the decade, but the way that Peter Quill is so addicted to it brings the song from tedious back into charming territory.
Now, you even have 10 year old kids not being able to resist the song every time the "I-I-I-I-I'm" chorus starts blaring. It may have taken some space drifter from Missouri to bring this song back, but now a whole new generation is being treated to one of the '70s' biggest earworms.
