10 Songs That Got More Popular Through Movies
4. Free Bird - Kingsmen the Secret Service
Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird" has been the death knell for any self respecting cover band for years now. At any given moment when you're on stage, you can count on that one ass-hole in the crowd who wants to hear the greatest guitar solo every time you try to make your way through a set. It's weird that a 9-minute guitar solo extravaganza is still resonating after 40 years, but Colin Firth's performance in Kingsmen may have a little something to do with it.
While on one of his surveillance assignments, Firth's character Harry ends up kicking ass and taking names all while the legendary guitar solo plays in the background. Though the carnage would probably be horrifying in a realistic scenario, the perfect choreography and continuous takes make every single second of fighting for your life feel like a lot of fun.
It's easy to say this part paid off in spades for Lynyrd Skynyrd, but in this case it ends up going both ways. The producers of Kingsmen could have selected any rock song, but the way the guitars go for broke throughout the tune makes every single part of this scene an unabashed thrill ride. Kingsmen may have been all about the Secret Service of England, but sometimes you got to reach down into Southern rock to get your point across.
