10 Songs That Got Popular After Being Used In Movies

7. American Girl - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

For all of the on the nose soundtrack songs that have been used in the movies, there comes a point where they start to get played out. Even if you listen to a song like Bad to the Bone or Born to Be Wild these days, there isn't a chance that you don't think about some dude on a motorcycle because of how many times people have sworn by them as biker anthems on the screen. Sometimes you need something just to throw the audience for a loop, and Silence of the Lambs actually managed to make Tom Petty terrifying.

While this movie technically is more of a psychological thriller than a straight horror movie, the scene where Buffalo Bill kidnaps one of his victims is bone chilling when you pair Petty's classic alongside it. If you go back and listen to the original version of the song, Petty is in rare form, with the chiming guitars and no BS approach to lyrics that make you feel like you're rolling down the window on a hot summer's day.

Knowing what we know about Buffalo Bill at this point though, the whole song almost sounds demonic when you pair them, almost serving as the soundtrack to what the deranged killer hears in his head as he attempts to snatch his next prey. In just a few seconds, those few scenes gave this heartland rocker the same effect of hearing a musical box in a haunted house. It might sound nice at the moment, but you know that something truly horrific is going to go down once everything is over.
