10 Songs You Probably Didn't Know Were Inspired By Horror Movies

6. Vampire Weekend – Walcott

Vampire Weekend have now been on the indie rock scene for a decade and a half, with a number of hits and four albums under their belts. Though casual listeners will be more familiar with tracks like Diane Young and Oxford Comma, the lesser-known Walcott is inseparably wound up in the band's name, lore, history and, of course, a horror film.

Now, this one is a bit of a Russian doll of meta references. In the mid-2000s, vocalist Ezra Koenig worked on a short film that was a response to the '80s teen vampire classic, The Lost Boys. This film is called Vampire Weekend, and is about a man named Walcott who travels to Cape Cod in order to warn the mayor that vampires are on their way. Thus, the band had a name, a song and a suitably obscure piece of filmmaking on which to found its music.

Though the film never saw the light of day (which might well be for the best), Walcott and his misadventures were nonetheless immortalised on the band's 2006 eponymous debut album. And the song takes its subject matter aslant - rather than going in on the monster-mash, it tells a tale of Bret Easton Ellis-esque disaffection with Northeastern life: 'F**k the women from Wellfleet/F**k the bears out in Provincetown/Heed my words and take flight'...
