As the infamous tagline told us, "in space, no one can hear you scream" and 1979's Alien has been unsettling audiences ever since.

Proving that horror and space can work perfectly in tandem, Alien is not only an effective space movie, but an incredibly effective chiller. What could be scarier than a claustrophobic environment inhabited by a murderous other-wordly creature? As Alien proved, space remains one of the scariest settings for any movie.

It also gave us one of the most iconic female characters in Sigourney Weaver's Ripley, a breath of fresh air in what was otherwise considered a fairly male-dominated genre. This paved the way for future female-fronted sci-fi films such as Gravity, Arrival, and Annihilation.
