10 Space Movies That Broke All The Rules

8. Solaris (2002)

Solaris George Clooney
20th Century Fox

This remake of the 1972 Andrei Tarkovsky film of the same name loses a fair chunk of the running time, but maintains the emotional weight and incredible depth, in a space movie unlike any other.

Whilst it takes a lot of visual cues both from the original, and from films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, what sets this film apart is its focus on the thematic heft and it's almost brazen dismissal of the expected tropes of the genre.

A psychological thriller more than a space movie, Solaris explores the human mind, and the effects of loneliness, all set against the vast empty backdrop of space.

In a time when space films favoured the thrilling action set-pieces and dramatic explosions, this was a film which broke the rules and provided a different perspective on the genre.
