10 Spine-Chilling Horror Movies Set In The Desert

9. Borderland

On a road trip to a Mexican border town, three college students encounter a local cult of Satanic drug smugglers, who kidnap one of their number in preparation for ritual human sacrifice. The race is on for the friends to rescue Phil (Rider Strong) before it's too late.

Not quite the long weekend of sex, drugs and drink the three might have envisioned, but the boys gamely give it their all. Sacrifices, after all, must be made.

Loosely based on a true story (that of drug lord and cult leader Adolfo de Jesús Constanzo), this grisly 2007 torture-thriller uses its washed-out, grimy visuals to unsettle and intimidate.

Isolated in a hostile border town, the gang may have a roof over their heads, but it scarcely matters. When the other people under that roof are a gang of fanatical bloodthirsty cultists? You'd probably have better luck wandering the wildernesses of the Mexican desert outside.
