The grumpy, no-nonsense Dr. “Bones” McCoy was a major part of the original Star Trek series. His arguments with Spock produced some funny moments, as well thought-provoking philosophy, across the series and the movies. His character’s catchphrase “I’m a doctor not a…” followed by things such as escalator, bricklayer and coal miner made him a favourite amongst fans.

In his final non-Star Trek movie (excluding his voice work for The Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars) DeForest Kelley plays college president Elgin Clark. Clark, wanting an ecological alternative to poison for his friend’s rabbit infestation contacts zoologist Roy for help. While experimenting with hormones and chemicals on lab rabbits, a test subject escapes, leading to the already pesky rabbits becoming giant, bloodthirsty killers that terrorise the town and surrounding farms and ranches. The national guard must be brought in to try and contain the problem. Night of the Lepus is based on the 1964 novel The Year of the Angry Rabbit.

It may not be a big-screen classic, but Night of the Lepus is a fun watch nonetheless, even if it is just for the goofy special effects and Kelley’s moustache. We see normal rabbits running around miniature sets, and occasionally there are men in rabbit suits for attack scenes. Another fun part of the movies is the “roaring” monsters that are obviously just yawning rabbits, usually with ketchup on their face.
