10 Star Wars Retcons So Dumb That It Actually Hurt

2. Darth Vader Built C-3PO... And Nobody Remembers?

The Phantom Menace established that C-3PO was built by the young Anakin Skywalker. On the surface it seems like a clever way to establish Anakin€™s intelligence at an early age. However, this gave C-3PO a significant role in the Prequel Trilogy, which poses a problem because nobody seems to remember C-3PO and his counterpart R2-D2 years later. In their few scenes together in the Original Trilogy, Vader makes no indication that he recognizes C-3PO or R2-D2 despite his earlier close ties with both of them. Even worse is the fact that wise old Obi-Wan Kenobi doesn€™t recognize them when Luke brings them to him in A New Hope. Not recognizing R2-D2 is one thing because we€™ve seen a lot of similar astromech droids throughout the six films, so there could be thousands of other droids that look just like R2-D2. But Obi-Wan does not recognize C-3PO, who has a distinctive voice and personality, after spending some of the most important moments of his life around him? Even worse? Luke€™s Uncle Owen doesn€™t seem to recognize C-3PO in A New Hope either despite Attack of the Clones establishing that he lived in the same house as C-3PO for years while Anakin was training to be a Jedi. Unless he had blocked C-3PO out of his mind for being so annoying (and who could blame him?), Owen should recognize C-3PO. While droids might be as common as lawnmowers in the Star Wars universe, it€™s hard to believe that none of these people distinctly remember C-3PO and R2-D2, the most important droids in the galaxy.
