10 Star Wars Retcons So Dumb That It Actually Hurt

8. Why Don€™t People (Like Han Solo) Believe In The Force?

One of the conflicts in the original Star Wars is that Han Solo thinks the Force is, in his words, €œall a lot of simple tricks and nonsense.€ Han isn€™t alone in his disbelief in the Force. Admiral Motti accuses Darth Vader of clinging to his €œsad devotion to that ancient Jedi religion.€ Han even tells Luke, €œI've flown from one side of this galaxy to the other, and I've seen a lot of strange stuff, but I've never seen anything to make me believe that there's one all-powerful Force controlling everything.€ Again, this added to the mysterious nature of the Force in the Original Trilogy. Han has a short memory because Revenge of the Sith establishes that the Jedi Purge took place 19 years before A New Hope, so Han and anyone else twenty or over were alive at the time when the Jedi were still patrolling the galaxy and openly using their Force powers. In fact, Han€™s best friend Chewbacca fought alongside Jedi at the Battle of Kashyyyk and helped Yoda escape the Jedi Purge in Revenge of the Sith. Did Chewie never tell Han about this? Was Han really unaware of this huge galactic organization that existed for thousands of years, including during his childhood? Since less than two decades passed between the trilogies, it would be like people today being doubtful of things that existed in 1995!
