10 Star Wars Theories That Make Appalling Sense

9. Qui-Gon Jinn Left A Killswitch In Anakin

During the adventures of Qui-Gon Jinn on Tatooine, he meets the unassuming blonde tot who will grow up to be Anakin Skywalker. Young Anakin is a slave, which as he explains to Qui-Gon over tea involves having an explosive device implanted that his owner can detonate to dissuade escape attempts. When Qui-Gon acquires the child from his owner Watto, the implant is presumably deactivated, but there is never mention made of it being removed.

This theory holds that Qui-Gon realised how powerful Anakin could be, but also how dangerous. He deliberately left the explosive implant in Anakin so if the ‘Chosen One’ ever fell to the Dark Side, Qui-Gon could end the threat my reactivating the implant and detonating the pre-Darth Jedi.

So why was it never done? Qui-Gon didn't trust his padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi with this knowledge, because Kenobi was still too inexperienced a Jedi to have such responsibility. Qui-Gon would have passed on the knowledge to the Jedi Council once he reached Coruscant with Anakin.

But he never arrived, having been impaled by Darth Maul during their duel on Naboo. So the killswitch stayed unused and undiscovered, even as Anakin spearheaded the destruction of the Jedi Order.
