The character of Supreme Leader Snoke, peculiarly deformed commander of the ex-Imperial First Order, is a character seemingly created specifically to spark debate over who he actually is. Theories abound over who Snoke might be: The Emperor's clone son, the Emperor's clone brother, Luke's clone brother, Mace Windu, Zombie Vader, Anakin's real father, Jar Jar Binks. Luke Skywalker makes as much sense as any of these, and according to this theory, he makes a lot more.

Luke's motivation as Snoke is to control the remnants of the Galactic Empire. Knowing he cannot destroy First Order, he instead commands them, and pits them against his old friends in the Resistance to keep them from interfering in the rest of the galaxy. His reasons for Starkiller Base's attack on the Republic is to encourage the Republic to finish off the First Order since the Resistance can't manage it.

Luke also has the First Order try to prevent the Resistance from recovering BB-8 and its information on his location to keep the Resistance from finding him, and potentially discovering the Last Jedi is also the Resistance's worst enemy. Finally Luke is seeking an apprentice, and is positioning both Kylo Ren and Rey for training.
