10 Stephen King Movies To Watch Before It

6. Dreamcatcher

The Shining Twins
Warner Bros.

Reminiscent of Stand By Me and It, but mostly flat out insane, Dreamcatcher is the first $70 million movie to feature Morgan Freeman (love those eyebrows) as a crazed Colonel who hunts aliens known as “sh*tweasels” in a helicopter gunship.

You can say a lot of things about Lawrence Kasdan’s movie (it starts out in the vein of Stand By Me, then morphs into a monster movie before turning apocalyptic near the end), but you can’t call it boring or badly produced.

Slickly made and full of colourful characters brought to life by a cast that includes Thomas Jane, Jason Lee, Timothy Olyphant and Tom Sizemore, Dreamcatcher is one of the biggest King adaptations ever mounted and its failure at the box office immediately sent Hollywood back to remaking Carrie and Salem’s Lot.

Among the other jolly sights are an alien snapping at Olyphant’s private parts while he writes his name in the snow and Lee and Damien Lewis trying to decide if the man using their latrine is in fact dead. You won’t find subtlety or sophistication here, but it’s a good time if taken on its own terms.
