10 Stephen King Stories That Wouldn't Work As Movies

3. Sneakers

Stephen King It Chapter 2
Scribner

Another inclusion from Nightmares and Dreamscapes, Sneakers is a genuinely creepy tale that could only suffer from a big screen treatment. Sneakers is about a record executive named John Tell who goes to the restroom at work, only to notice a dirty pair of sneakers under the door of a toilet stall.

when John visits the john again throughout the week, he notices that the shoes have moved and are are now surrounded by the bodies of dead bugs. Eventually, Tell discovers that the shoes belonged to a local drug dealer who was killed in the bathroom stall during an apparent robbery.

John finally confronts the man's ghost. The ghost tells him that he was brutally killed by Jannings, Tell's boss. Jannings was a drug addict who was heavily in debt to the dealer at the time. Jannings used the stolen drugs to fund his rehabilitation and rise to executive management. This prompts Tell to quit his job, telling Jannings he is a "worthless bastard" before leaving. When he arrives home, he resolves to find other work, pulling out the want ads and reading them while sitting on the toilet, of course.
