10 Strangest Best Picture Nominations In Oscar History

8. Titanic (1997)

The strange case of James Cameron€™s Titanic is in fact one of modern day€™s greatest mysteries. The philosopher Zizek tells an interesting anecdote about the film Titanic. According to him, there was no tragedy in the Titanic. The real tragedy would have occurred if Rose and Jake had continued seeing each other. Think Blue Valentine with a more aristocratic bent. Titanic is basically a more refined, expensive retelling of Kitty Foyle with a role reversal. It is not funny and smart like Silver Linings Playbook. It is flat and reeks of clichés. This film actually was considered to be better than L.A. Confidential and Good Will Hunting. Admittedly, 1997 was a slim year €“ nonetheless few films have been as historically overrated as Titanic. One could argue that Titanic is indeed the strangest nomination of all time €“ and this can be ascribed to mass hysteria. James Cameron went on to redo the film with computer technology and a more upbeat ending with a sci-fi twist. Any film critic that tries to convince you that this film is anything other than vacuous tripe is lying. Perhaps, Titanic is not so strange after all if one considers James recent oeuvre as a return to the golden age of Hollywood: where creativity takes a back seat to money.

Marvin Lee Dupree hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
