10 Strangest Best Picture Nominations In Oscar History

7. The Godfather: Part III (1990)

Godfather 3

The rage vented towards Sophia Coppolla for her acting in this film is hilarious, besides the fact that it was not so atrocious; especially when considering the fact that this film is painfully mediocre and this mediocrity is accentuated by the fact that its two predecessors are among the greatest films of the last fifty years. In fact that sole fact makes it a strange nomination, almost as if the Academy would decide to nominate Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull just because Raiders of the Lost Ark received a nomination for best film. However, the main reason is the simple fact another Mafia film was nominated at the 63rd Academy Awards. Yes, both Goodfellas and Godfather III were nominated the same year just like Rebecca and Kitty Foyle. Goodfellas is, quiet frankly, one of the greatest films of cinematic history with superb cinematography. So, that begs the question: why nominate a superfluous film such as Godfather III? Out of respect to I and II? If anything it seems to be cruel nomination, rewarding mediocrity out of respect for former glory. Godfather III was a strange choice indeed.

Marvin Lee Dupree hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
