10 Strangest Best Picture Nominations In Oscar History

6. The 71st Academy Awards Entirely

Saving Private Ryan First of all there were three unforgivable snubs: The Truman Show, The Big Lebowski and American History X. The worst part is that the same year, both The Thin Red Line and Saving Private Ryan were nominated. As I mentioned previously, few things are more irksome than when the Academy decides to nominate films that deal with very similar themes and topics; in fact too similar and one film is vastly superior to the other. In this case the superior film was The Thin Red Line. The Thin Red Line was actually the film that should have won the Oscar that year which makes Saving Private Ryan an even more weird nomination aesthetically. Nobody remembers anything from Saving Private Ryan except the beginning, the Nazi that is killed and the corny ending. Saving Private Ryan is vintage Spielberg and another classic mistake from the Academy.

Marvin Lee Dupree hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
