1. 2001: A Space Odyssey
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXS8P0HksQo One I have a slightly stronger grasp on though still happen to find the weirdest of all is the climax to Stanley Kubrick's stunning sci-fi masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey. One can't knock the aesthetic qualities of the scene; the visuals, the score and the performances are all top-notch, but things get almost impenetrably weird once the protagonist, Dave, winds up at some sort of futuristic space hotel as an old man, before a monolith appears in front of him, and seems to turn him into the so-called Star Child, a baby who floats around in space in a cocoon, staring at Earth, presumably forever more. I theorise that the ending is suggesting that Dave has ascended to the next level of human evolution, a formless space being generated by the power of the monolith, but frankly, who knows? There's a billion other explanations out there, but what's clear is that it's a transcendent moment of cinema whatever you think about it thematically. That, and it's the strangest ending to a film I've ever seen. What's the weirdest ending you've ever seen to a movie? Let us know in the comments below.
