10 Strangest Endings In Movie History

4. Donnie Darko

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDt0bNNnWiE Trying to make sense of Donnie Darko purely by observing what's on the screen (at least in the theatrical cut) is a real effort; you can go off and read The Philosophy of Time Travel to try and get a better idea, but really, it's all just a bit of a stew that's open to viewer interpretation, as it should be. The basic premise is that a socially dysfunctional teen, Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal), is awoken by a man in a bizarre rabbit costume, and told that a Doomsday prophecy is to come true in 28 days. He goes home to find a jet engine has crashed through his bedroom, and he would surely have been killed had he not been awake. The film arrives at a finale in which Donnie ends up travelling back in time to the day that this jet engine flies through his bedroom, but this time is killed by it, sacrificing himself to save those he loves by preventing the universe from imploding upon itself. What makes it weird is how vague its depiction of time travel is throughout; I'm sure many watched the film without even realising that this figured in the plot, with Donnie eventually pulling a Jesus and dying in order for everyone else to live.
