10 Strangest Movie Changes Made After Filming
6. Changing Chinese Imagery To Korean - Red Dawn (2012)
In a hilarious case of a studio vastly overestimating a movie's worth, the 2012 remake of '80s action classic Red Dawn was given a most peculiar post-production overhaul at the behest of MGM.
During shooting, the Army invading the United States was Chinese - in timely contrast to the Soviets from the original - but when it dawned on the studio that they risked cutting out the incredibly lucrative Chinese market in the process, they decided to act.
And so, the Chinese antagonists were changed to North Korean by way of re-editing, VFX tweaks to change various Chinese insignia to North Korean, and dialogue being re-dubbed into Korean. All in all, the alterations apparently cost around $1 million.
While you'd probably never notice the changes without being told beforehand, the move nevertheless backfired epically for MGM, given that Red Dawn ultimately wasn't granted a Chinese release anyway.
And so, on top of the $65 million remake flopping at the box office, it also lost an extra million bucks pandering to a market that wasn't having any of it. Oops.
