9. Alan Arkin, Argo - Best Supporting Actor (2013)
I am a big fan of Alan Arkin. His performance in Little Miss Sunshine is beautiful and gripping and his death comes as a great sadness to all audience members (unless youre a robot). He without a doubt deserved the golden Baldie for this role. I also loved Argo, and although many would disagree with me I personally thought it was deserving of the Best Picture title this year. Affleck wasnt as annoying as I usually find him, the story was compelling and well filmed, and the film came together incredibly well. So it truly breaks my heart to say that I dont think that Arkin should have been nominated for this film. It seemed to me that he was merely playing himself and compared to the other deserving thespians in this category his performance did not stand out. There are dozens of other actors that could have held the spot that Arkin took this year. One in particular stands out for me and that is Leonardo Friggin DiCaprio. His role as the villainous Calvin Candie stands out for me as one of his best performances to date. On the less well-known side of the spectrum, Dwight Henry in Beasts of the Southern Wild could have easily filled the shoes of Arkin in the best supporting actor category. Again, I thought Arkin was fine in this movie- I just think he was nothing more than that.
