8. Superman Returns - Best Visual Effects (2007)
We can all agree Superman Returns sucked right? I mean even Kevin Spacey, who in my opinion is one of the best actors in Hollywood, fell flat as the iconic Lex Luthor. None the less the visual are present... right? Like when he picks up the island? Or like the ice castle maybe? The fact that I cant even remember a single stunning scene in that movie means that maybe the academy slipped up with this one, and any Superman movie is such a freebie for special effects. He is literally known for having incredible superpowers and performing death-defying actions all in the name of justice and his lady love- so why couldnt they throw a few more special effects? What Im trying to say is that if you have free license to defy to laws of physics- do so. Also: look at that costume - look at it! Couldnt add some cool CGI or reduce the pant bulge a little? No I guess not. Understandably, The Academy doesnt always have a good pool of movies to pick from for their special effects ballot, so maybe they just chose Superman Returns to fill that gap. Yeah. So wrong. Pans Labyrinth, Children of Men, 300, and The Prestige are just a few of the movies that stunned audience members that year with their spectacular visuals. Children of Men created a real world so devoid of hope and the visual reflected this.300s visuals were unlike anything cinema had seen before and were noticeably absent at the Oscars. So why the thoroughly underwhelming superman remake was up for the award is baffling, especially when so many other films deserved the award that year.
