10 Stunning Movies With One Awful CGI Moment
1. The Dinosaurs - The Tree Of Life
Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life is one of the most visually sumptuous films ever made, and is renowned for its keen focus on practical effects wherever possible.
Malick was so against using CGI to depict the creation of the universe that he convinced 2001: A Space Odyssey's legendary special effects supervisor Douglas Trumbull to work on the project, using old-school chemical and photographic techniques to achieve the desired results.
But there is one noted sequence where Malick is unable to rely on practical effects, and that's when depicting dinosaurs interacting on Earth.
The brief scene shows one dinosaur deciding not to eat a wounded fellow dinosaur, but the texture of the dinos' skin and their movement animation looks oddly cheap and out of step with the film's otherwise majestic effects work.
Honestly, it looks more like a decent episode of Walking with Dinosaurs than it does a meticulous work from one of the most acclaimed filmmakers of all time.
