10 Stunts That Went Wrong In James Bond Films
5. Helicopter Mishap - You Only Live Twice
While the Bobsleigh stunt from For Your Eyes Only (see entry 2 on this list) was the only stunt that resulted in a fatality on a Bond set, the horrific injuries suffered by the cameraperson during the filming of You Only Live Twice was still very much a tragedy. In fact the results of the stunt accident indirectly lead to the death of the cameraman involved, John Jordan, two years later.
The incident occurred during the filming of the Little Nellie aircraft scene, in which Bond flies a portable aircraft around the Japanese mountain range. While Ken Wallis flew the plane as Connery's double, Jordan was hooked up via a harness to film the scene.
During filming, his foot was sliced off by the blades of the helicopter when his harness slipped. While Jordan survived this incident, this mishap tragically led to his demise two years later. During filming aerial shots for the film Catch-22, Jordan lost his footing due to his prosthetic leg slipping, falling to his death.
While this was the greatest mishap to befall the film, this proved to be just one of many incidents to occur on and off the seemingly cursed set. Legendary producers Albert R Broccoli and Harry Saltzman were booked to fly back to London, but fortunately changed their plans to view a Karate demonstration.
To their shock, the plane they were originally booked to fly on crashed, killing all on board. There was also tension throughout production with Connery growing disenfranchised with his role and pay, while actresses set to be axed from the movie only kept their roles after threatening to commit suicide.
