Spike Lee's Oldboy stands as one of the most utterly pointless movie remakes of all time, a woefully unimaginative attempt to take the thrilling South Korean original and introduce it to a whole new audience to no avail (the film was a huge bomb). Easily the worst thing about it is the laughably bad performance by Sharlto Copley as the antagonist, Adrian Pryce, donning a hammy British accent that renders everything he says ridiculous. Copley, who proved himself a natural actor on District 9, was clearly shooting for something totally out-there and weird, but he probably didn't expect it to elicit laughs. It ruins pretty much every scene he's in, and confirms just how much of a dud Lee's remake is. The director should have listened to one word from Copley's mouth and told him to try something else. Was his native South African accent not menacing enough?
