Battle of the Year is a dance movie that somehow made the Step Up flicks look like Oscar-worthy masterpieces. It was constructed from the most lazy assembly of cliches, with flat character work, poor acting, and nowhere near enough dancing. The fact that Chris Brown starred in it certainly didn't help things either. However, its worst offence of all was the horrendous use of product placement at almost every turn, culminating in one outrageous scene as the entire dance troupe receive sponsorship gifts, including a Sony PS Vita, prompting one character to say, "It's a PS Vita. You can play it from the back!" That line of dialogue, in so blatantly endorsing the product, has more effort put into it than any other line in the entire movie. Though the film's brazen keenness to act as a commercial shill is almost laudable in its sheer hilarious audacity, it also makes for one of the most painful, cringe-inducing scenes of 2013.
