10 Subplots That Saved Entire Movies
3. Miles' Relationship With Uncle Aaron - Into The Spider-Verse
Into the Spider-Verse could so very easily have been abysmal, it's breakneck pacing being its downfall rather than the wind beneath its wings, too busy and frantic for the viewer to get engaged with the cast. There are many factors the movie had going for it that kept it from this fate, but it all comes back to the movie knowing exactly when to slow down and for how long.
Most Spider-Man fans know the big twist Miles' story gives to the Spider-Man origin story: instead of having a saintly uncle who dies because of his hubris, Miles has an uncle - Aaron Davis - who genuinely loves him but is also the supervillain Prowler. The movie follows these beats to the letter, giving the scenes with Miles and his uncle exactly the right amount of breathing room. Which, for anyone uninitiated with Miles' origin, makes his discovery of his uncle's secret identity all the more heartbreaking.
Not only would Miles be bereft of an origin story if this subplot was cut, but the film would have become too fast paced for its own good and left the audience in the dust.
