10 Subtle Movie Homages You Definitely Missed
3. Cameron’s Ferrari - Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (Homage To Star Wars)
This one’s only subtle because it comes out of nowhere and only lasts for less than 30 seconds, but it’s definitely possible that people caught this the first time.
Towards the start of the movie, Cameron leaves his dad’s Ferrari at the garage and asks the two attendants to keep it safe. They give it back to him in one piece, but not before they enjoy their own day off while Cameron and Ferris have theirs.
As the car leaps through the air, John Williams’ iconic Star Wars theme rings out. While that’s something most people will be aware of, there’s more to the homage than that. The jump is also shot in slow motion, reminiscent of the spaceships crawling through space into the frame, as many establishing shots do in Star Wars.
Also, the zoom in on the car’s dials is something Star Wars is fairly well known for too. Finally, it also sets up the idea that anyone can have an adventure, that Cameron needs to stand up to his father more, and of the ordinary ways you can make someone else happy, which are all key themes of the movie to begin with.
