9. John Carpenter's Spawn
Sorcha EdwardJohn Carpenter was already on his downward trajectory when Spawn #1 first appeared in 1992. Nevertheless if he could have squeezed out one more decent film before mediocrity started to seep in with 1997s Escape From LA Spawn would have been a fitting property to stop the rot. The Carpenter making this version of Spawn would be the same director who gave us The Thing, They Live, Big Trouble In Little China and Prince of Darkness, as such this film would arrive at the end of that run and reflect elements of each. Keith David would be the only choice for Carpenters Al Simmons with Kurt Russell playing his best friend Terry, this would be a nice subversion of their roles in The Thing (and David's in They Live) with David taking the lead. Lee van Cleef would have made a perfect Jason Wynn but seeing as he wasnt around at this point the role could go to James Brolin. Another Carpenter fave Donald Pleasance would complete the cast as The Clown in one of his final film roles. Proving himself the master of three genres in Action, Science-Fiction and Horror, often by combining all three, Carpenter in his prime would have been the ideal director for Todd McFarlane's creation, bringing with him the visceral horror of Robb Botin's effects team to bring the damned Al Simmons' charred corpse to life.
