10 Superhero Movie Clichés That Need To Die

9. "It Was A Science Experiment Gone Wrong..."

The-Lizard-the-amazing-spider-man We know, we know: how else can writers gift their characters with superpowers given that it's impossible in real-life? And unless the characters happen to be mutants (in which they're born with their powers), a science experiment gone wrong seems like the only legitimate way to go. Fair enough: to quote Squirrel Girl, "it's a tough nut to crack." Our issues actually lie with super-villains who start out as good guys, only to find themselves injected or imbued with the very substance they created and turned evil as a result. And that's becoming a little old now, given that Spider-Man's Green Goblin, Doc Ock and (more recently) Dr. Kurt Connors, all started out as good men ruined by their own experiments. Worst of all, upon their deaths, these super-villains nearly always emerge briefly from the dark side to say something of their old selves: "I'm sorry, Peter..." How about more villains - like the excellent and classically-rendered Loki - who are just plain evil?
