10 Superhero Movies That Made Major Changes To Iconic Comic Moments
8. The Death Of Superman - Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice
The Comic Book Moment: In the early 90s, in a bid to boost sales and capitalise on the spectator boom, DC decided they were going to kill Superman. To do so they created a whole new killing machine, Doomsday, an ancient Kryptonian beast who would target the Last Son of Krypton and engage him in an epic battle that spanned several issues and culminated in the pair punching each other to death. The Man of Steel came back to life in a story arc that was even more lacklustre.
The Movie Version: Warner Bros. were desperate to adapt Superman's death ever since it was first published; that was the lynchpin of Tim Burton's canned Superman Lives and, although everyone forgets it, Kal-El's heart did stop in Superman Returns. And they finally really did it with Batman V Superman; Lex Luthor creates Doomsday, a cross mutation of his blood with Kryptonian DNA who ravages Metropolis and Gotham, before Superman gallantly spears himself on the monsters arm to save the day.
Did The Change Work? Making Doomsday a Luthor-creation isn't too big a deal as it acts as a meta-parallel of DC's original conception of the character, but the execution of the actual act is woeful. There's no establishment of Superman's identity crisis and, as with the end of Man Of Steel, this doesn't feel like the only option. Snyder also brings Superman back before the end credits roll, which may be worse than the four Supermen cack in the comics.
