Tom Hardy was superbly cast in the far-better-than-it-should-have-been 2015 Mad Max reboot. As the titular angry man he was all rage and muscle, prone more to action than words. He had his own film pinched from him, though, by the original character Imperator Furiosa, played to perfection by Charlize Theron, who has a solid claim to be the First Lady of modern action movies.

Furiosa is one of the more complex characters in a deliciously simple movie, part of antagonist Immortan Joe’s inner circle who becomes a heroic figure and freedom fighter over the course of the film. The image of Theron with her shaved head, fixed stare, and mysterious mechanical arm was instantly iconic, one of the most striking visuals in a brilliant looking film.

Director George Miller, buoyed by the film’s rave reviews, looks set to expand the franchise, and should be sure to start with Furiosa. Max may be mad, but Theron’s character is downright fascinating, more relatable and more frightening, too. She emerges from the film the hero, and her reward should be main event status the next go round.
