10 Supporting Movie Characters Who Deserve Their Own Film

3. Bigfoot Bjornsen - Inherent Vice

Paul Thomas Anderson’s adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s neo noir is a severely underrated film. It’s confusing, sure, but once you accept that not everything makes sense, the vibes, humour, and real moments of pathos make this one of the director’s best works.

One of the finest elements of the movie is Josh Brolin as Bigfoot Bjornsen, a belligerent, fame hungry, but ultimately decent cop who clashes with Joaquin Phoenix’s hazy private eye. Brolin has seldom been better, using his muscular presence and straight laced looks to mine big laughs from the culture clash. He embodies the system and has no truck with those looking to live outside it.

A spinoff could be as silly or serious as you liked given Brolin’s talents, but the hulking actor rarely gets the chance to exercise his funny bone, and a return to the style he exhibits in Inherent Vice would be welcome.

The world Anderson creates is simply great fun to spend time in. The film is packed full of colourful characters, but Bigfoot has perhaps the most scope for further exploration.
