10 Supporting Movie Characters Who Should've Been The Lead

5. Credence Barebone (Fantastic Beasts)

Hit Girl
Warner Bros.

The Fantastic Beast movies are an odd couple. The first one was a decent adventure film with one or two glaring issues, and the second one induces violent fits of homicidal rage whenever thought about. So let's keep this brief.

There are many - many - things that could have been done to fix this series of movies and keep it from going off the rails like it did. But one method stands out: making Credence Barebone the main character.

This might seem an odd decision, considering Eddie Redmayne's Newt is one of the few things potterheads actually like about these films, and we've kinda done the whole "ordinary young man is actually magical god baby" routine last time. Which is true, so Credence should stay the bad guy like he is in the films proper.

Credence being the protagonist, while Newt is still technically the good guy, would be an excellent subversion on the Harry Potter formula. It would give these movies an identity outside of "here's a lore thing you recognize, clap you sheep!" It would also help us actually care about Credence's slow descent into villainy that just isn't explored enough in the films as they are.
