8. Morpheus Gives Away Crucial Information During A Phone Call He Knows Is Tapped - The Matrix
In the world of
The Matrix, Morpheus is supposed to be our go-to character for what I'm going to brand movie "comfort"- he fills us in with the plot details, makes us feel safe, is incredibly smart and skilled at fighting, and - best of all - he's somebody we can trust. Morpheus is the Gandalf of
The Matrix series. So much so, in fact, that it becomes all too easy to take every single one of his decisions as though they're all the best and most thought-out choices in the history of mankind. I mean, this character doesn't make mistakes, right? He was the only guy who realised Neo was the One. He saved freakin' humanity because he had the foresight to track him down. But Morpheus might not be quite as smart as we think he is, given that - just like the rest of us - he's prone to making incredibly dumb calls. And in this case, it's literally a "dumb call." A phone call, in fact. Think back to that call that Morpheus makes to Neo towards the beginning of the movie, the one where he says: This line is tapped, so I must be brief. They got to you first, but theyve underestimated how important you are. If they knew what I know, youd probably be dead. At first you think,
okay, cool, and then... excuse me? Did you just reveal the exact information you didn't want the agents to know on a phone you
knew was being tracked? Uh-oh.
