The Wolverine climaxes with Logan (Hugh Jackman) battling the Silver Samurai, a massive armoured suit touting blades made of adamantium. And while the fight itself is fine enough, the reveal of who is inside it? Not so much.

It turns out that the Silver Samurai is being operated by Ichirō Yashida (Haruhiko Yamanouchi), the terminally ill, presumed dead old man who offered to take Logan's healing abilities away in order to save his own life earlier in the film, and who decades prior Logan had shielded from the atomic bombing of Nagasaki.

Ichirō attempts to use the Silver Samurai to extract Logan's healing factor by force, and as he does so begins to reverse his ageing, only for Logan to turn the tide with some help from Ichirō's granddaughter Mariko (Tao Okamoto).

Though the Silver Samurai was definitely an inspired villain choice as far as CGI-slathered antagonists go, it would've seemed decidedly less silly if the armour was controlled by Ichirō's son Shingen (Hiroyuki Sanada) instead.

Sure, it would've required some narrative re-working - given that Logan kills Shingen and all - but having the Silver Samurai be a dying old guy was far goofier than the filmmakers thought it would be, and Ichirō's heel turn came totally out of nowhere.
