Like Terminator Genisys' big John Connor reveal, few were left truly surprised by The Dark Knight Rises' big twist, that Wayne Enterprises exec Miranda Tate (Marion Cotillard) turns out to be Talia al Ghul, daughter of Ra's (Liam Neeson).

Even if you managed to avoid the set snaps that had been doing the rounds for almost a year before the film hit cinemas, the fact that Miranda Tate wasn't in the comics proved immediately suspicious for an actress of Cotillard's caliber.

And then, of course, there's the briefly-seen scar which Nolan lingers on for perhaps a second too long after "Miranda" and Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) have knocked boots.

The third act of course reveals Talia to be the true mastermind to Bane's (Tom Hardy) crying lapdog, and if her emergence at Bane's expense wasn't frustrating enough, she went on to have a death scene so comically overwrought that it almost single-handedly killed the character's esteem among fans.

Even ignoring its predictability, this just didn't hit with the visceral intensity Nolan clearly wanted it to, especially as Bane was plenty villain for one movie.
