8. The Shower Room Shootout (The Rock)
Would you believe that The Rock was actually released as part of The Criterion Collection? Though that might be faint praise given that Armageddon also was - in a sure bout of nepotism, as one of Bay's University professors selected it - it's regarded as Bay's best film by most, and with good reason. This shower scene shootout - which was notably referenced a few years ago in the video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - is an extremely frantic, tense scene which doesn't just flippantly shoot bodies down, but rather lingers on the anxious tension of it all. Once the shootout kicks off, Bay harnesses some of his best coverage ever, keeping the action comprehensible rather than relying on frenetic editing to make things seem exciting. The bodies hit the floor, and when it's all said and done, Bay gives us a cracking crane shot of all the carnage and strewn bodies.
