10 Surprisingly Awesome 2020 Movies You Probably Missed
8. Spree
As much as social media satires are so often clumsy and outdated, Eugene Kotlyarenko's savagely entertaining black comedy Spree has its finger on the pulse like few other recent entries in the genre.
Joe Keery stars as Kurt Kunkle, a rideshare driver obsessed with social media superstardom, whose desperation to go viral sees him becoming increasingly dangerous, unhinged, and eventually murderous.
Keery is terrific in a film that, while in no way subtle, aptly distills the darker side of social media "influencer" culture into a heightened, deeply disturbing horror-comedy.
Slickly directed by Kotlyarenko with an appropriately in-your-face style, Spree is a rare film that succeeds at being "down with the kids" while also making gnarly fun of contemporary young-adult culture.
