3. The Platform

Netflix's Spanish thriller The Platform boasts a premise that could so easily have resulted in a laughable, heavy-handed mess of a film, and though Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia's feature debut is anything but subtle, it sure is a lot of fun.

Though for many it evidently got lost in the streaming shuffle - in large part because Netflix does such a horrible job promoting their films - The Platform takes place in a tower-like prison where inmates reside on one of many floors.

There, they wait to be fed by a platform which travels from the top of the facility to the bottom, leaving those on lower levels to feast on the dregs left for them by those above.

Again, its commentary on class warfare has no time for subtlety, yet Gaztelu-Urrutia makes good on the deliciousness of the setup thanks to both his stellar ensemble cast and some gorgeous production design despite the evidently low budget.

With just enough surprises to sustain along its 94-minute runtime, The Platform's claustrophobic riffing on social inequality feels perfectly - albeit accidentally - timed for our present moment.
