Did a single living soul on this Earth expect the Gerard Butler-starring disaster movie Greenland to score anything above 30% on Rotten Tomatoes?

With marketing that leaned into its schlockiest elements and the generally shaky rep of Butler-led blockbusters, there wasn't much reason to expect anything from this but unintentional comedy and braindead action.

Yet as it turns out, this apocalyptic thriller in which Butler's protagonist John Garrity attempts to shepherd his family to safety before a comet impacts with the Earth places far more of a focus on its characters than its planet-ravaging action. Hell, critics even liked it.

While there are numerous scenes of city-wide destruction throughout, the script is far more interested in the basic survival of the Garrity family, as makes this far more relatable and involving than it otherwise would be.

Yes, it's undeniably melodramatic and the visual effects are all over the place, but thanks to solid performances from Butler, Morena Baccarin, and Scott Glenn, Greenland keeps the humanity of its story front-and-center. Who ever saw that coming?
