The Wizard of Oz might be one of the very first true family movies and has some incredible themes running throughout such as encouraging the audience to have courage, pursue education and to embrace one another... or whatever the heart actually means.

Unfortunately, the protagonist's desires aren't the limit of the themes the movie focuses on - there's also two separate and pretty gruesome instances of murder to address too... which the film fails to do as the deaths Dorothy directly and indirectly causes are central to the plot progressing to her interpretation of a happy ending.

The indirect instance of murder befalls the Wicked Witch of the East at the start of the movie as Dorothy's house lands smack bang on the witch killing her instantly. To explain why this is grim in slightly finer detail; the average weight of a 3 bedroom house in the UK is 10 metric tonnes so it's very likely the bits of the witch the house actually hit are a bit squishier than they were.

The more direct instance occurs when the group are actually tasked with disposing of the Wicked Witch of the West in order to have their wishes granted - murder and greed combined? Great job MGM!

Dorothy accidentally spills some water onto the witch and she literally melts. If I had the choice of how to go, I would 100% avoid anything that involves melting or dissolving thanks completely to this movie.
