10 Surprisingly Realistic Movie Scenes Nobody Saw Coming
2. "Aim For The Bushes" - The Other Guys
Adam McKay's The Other Guys may seem like a kooky action-comedy that plays reality pretty loosey-goosey, but it actually exploits that for the sake of one outrageously funny early gag with a shockingly realistic outcome.
Detectives Chris Danson (Dwayne Johnson) and P. K. Highsmith (Samuel L. Jackson) are the beloved rock star cops of the precinct, who despite causing immeasurable property damage in the pursuit of petty criminals, always get their men.
But that all changes early in the movie when Danson and Highsmith chase down their latest perps, who use a zipline to speedily escape from a rooftop to the ground.
Never deterred from a challenge, though, Danson and Highsmith decide to "aim for the bushes," leaping from the rooftop with reckless abandon.
We as the audience clearly expect them to inexplicably survive, yet the hilariously drawn-out slow-motion sequence, set to Foo Fighters' "My Hero," sees them eventually land on the pavement and be killed instantly.
This isn't the only surprisingly bout of realistic action in the movie, though - later on when Gamble (Mark Wahlberg) and Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg) walk towards a building that explodes, they're sent flying to the ground by the shockwave, despite being a solid 20 feet away.
More to the point, they spend the rest of the scene writhing around in agony, complaining about their lost hearing and Hollywood's irresponsible depiction of explosions.
